In the debut instalment of the Art meets Science programme, Re:people collaborated with the IMGGE to bring audiences closer to the world of biopigments. With the invitation to contribute to the year long interdisciplinary project, artists Emir Šehanović, Emilija Radojičić, Jovana Čavorović, Dragana Lukić and Sonja Lundin worked with the team from IMGGE, researching new approaches to an innovative challenge in ecological sculpting, weaving, installation art and printmaking. The project resulted in two exhibitions – at the Museum of Applied Arts in Belgrade and the Petrović Foundation in Montenegro, guided tours as well as a retrospective panel discussion at the co-working hub Nova Iskra in partnership with the MADE IN Platform.
“In contemporary discourse on art, a ‘pigment’ can be classified by means of various practical nomenclatures, such as RGB, CMYK, and others. However, ‘pigment’ has a multifaceted meaning and the basis for its perceivable characteristics cannot be defined or reproduced.
The Worlds within Worlds exhibition does not limit itself to a distanced, scientific perspective, but, rather, deals with the personal and emotional relationship that comes from its origin as filtered through experiment, while its heritage and topographic remnants of life become the focus of artistic research. The colonised micro-organisms, sourced from a variety of natural starting points, enable economic and technological benefits by replacing artificial pigments with organic ones and decreasing the quantity of waste discharged into water. As such, the entire concept of the project looks at the issue of effects, specifically the effects of natural heritage, as a way of thinking and associating through cultural practice, much like observing and remembering affect us.”

The 2023 AMS project furthered its reach all the way into Montenegro, making an international show of the collaboration between the IMGGE, Re:people and its guest artists at the Petrović Njegoš Foundation in Podgorica. There to promote the event were Curator Ivan Šuković, Artist Dragana Lukić and Chemist Jelena Lazić.
Held at the co-working hub Nova Iskra, Dorćol, in partnership with the MADE IN Platform, this roundtable discussion invited the AMS artists and AMS chemist Jelena Lazić, along with guest speaker artist Milica Lazarević, to share their experiences throughout working with bio-pigments.
How do we define an innovative artwork from innovative technology? Where is the boundary between interdisciplinary collaboration and technical advising? What does the future hold for the arts and sciences, in tandem? These questions, and more, were posed to our colleagues in order to delve into the contemporary art scene and its melding with the sciences.
