„The Open Western Balkan Collaboratory on Online Platform Work: Serbia, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina“ is a project run by the Public Policy Research Center as a leading partner and the Luigj Gurakuqi University of Shkodër from Albania and Association for Social, cultural and creative development Zora from Zenica (BiH). It is aimed at improving cooperation and scientific exchange between educational and research institutions, civil society and the public sector in our three countries.
Our endeavour focuses on the online platform economy, which is attracting young workers from the Western Balkans and could potentially help prevent brain drain. The project also aims to promote gender equality and equal opportunities for women and men in this field. By strengthening scientific and policy resources, the project hopes to inspire educated debate on how to incorporate selected solutions from the forthcoming European Directive on platform economy into public policies in these countries.
The specific objective of the project is to devise a draft matrix for applied research on the topic of platform economy based on datasets on the geography of platform work in the three countries in terms of gender, income, and occupations. This data will be provided through an algorithmic instrument called Gigmetar, developed by the CENTER, a key partner in the project. The matrix will be a starting point for designing gender-sensitive research and policy products in each country, and testing employment solutions offered in the European Directive on platform economy within national contexts. Other Western Balkan countries can replicate this matrix.
This project has been funded by the Western Balkans Fund and European Union, under the Call for Regional Project Proposals, “Support to the Promotion of Civil Society regional activities in the Western Balkans.
The project runs from January 1 to September 30, 2023.
