Don’t Miss: Art Meets Science 2026

1–3 October 2026 | Belgrade
Rare Earths at Dots Gallery until 31 October

From 1 to 3 October, Belgrade will become a meeting point for artists, scientists, researchers, curators and audiences exploring questions at the intersection of art, science, technology and contemporary society.

This year’s Art Meets Science 2026, organised by Re – Centre for Society and Technology, explores the material foundations of our technological world through an exhibition, lectures and an art-research programme. Particular attention is given to resources, energy, mining, biology, artificial intelligence and the infrastructure that remains hidden behind our everyday digital reality.

The programme opens on 1 October at Dots Gallery with the group exhibition Rare Earths. Curated by Fabricio Lamonca, the exhibition brings together artists and researchers whose work connects art, technology, science, ecology and the material processes shaping the contemporary world. Participants include Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler, Victoria Vesna, Thomas Thwaites, Volkan Dinçer, Total Refusal and researchers from JKU’s Soft Matter Physics Division.

The title Rare Earths refers to seventeen chemical elements that are essential to modern technologies, from smartphones and computers to electric vehicles and wind turbines. The exhibition takes as its starting point the question: What lies behind the technologies we use every day? It opens up a space to reflect on the relationship between technology, nature, labour, energy, extraction and the future of our planet.

On the second day, 2 October, internationally recognised curator and researcher Jens Hauser will be a guest at Artget, Cultural Centre of Belgrade, with his lecture Active Elementals: From Materiality to Microperformativity.

On 3 October, the programme returns to Dots Gallery, where artist and professor Victoria Vesna, Director of the UCLA Art|Sci Center, will present her artistic practice and longstanding work at the intersection of art, science and technology.
