Project description

CENTAR is a partner in the project whose goal is to point out the necessary digital competencies in the field of work and employment and thus enable decision-makers in Serbia to respond to new labor market demands. As a country that simultaneously faces three industrial revolutions, Serbia is motivated to capitalize on the potential that technology development brings with it and transform its labor market and the overall economy.

The fourth Industrial Revolution welcomes some of the most profound changes to the status of human existence. Technology touches every part of life and rapidly molds the way in which the economy works. Up to 43% of the tasks conducted currently by the labor force have the risk of being automated, especially the ones consisting of simple algorithmic processes (Frey and Osborne 2013). However, even amongst jobs that are not predicted to be completely automatized, the introduction of technology into the workplace can prove to generate the need for a shift in necessary skills. Additionally, digital technology holds a weighty role in the creation of new types of work in anywhere from software development to the digital gig economy.

Overall, it is predicted that over 90% of all jobs will require varying levels of digital skills in the near future (European Commission 2017). As such, the ability to adapt to the changing nature of the economy relies on the attainment of these increasingly important skills. An important way that state government can ensure the preparedness of their populations is by promoting robust and equitable means of digital education. However, the processes and standards of designing this type of education must be carefully considered.
